Shot Blasting

At Builders Beams R Us, we are proud to offer expert shot blasting services for structural steel in Wakefield and across West Yorkshire. As a leading supplier and fabricator of high-quality structural steel, we understand the importance of durable, long-lasting finishes that protect your steel beams, columns, and frameworks from corrosion and wear.

Shot blasting is an essential process to ensure the longevity and quality of your structural steel, and we are here to provide fast, reliable, and cost-effective solutions tailored to your project needs.

Shot blasting is the process of cleaning and preparing the surface of steel by propelling abrasive material at high speeds, effectively removing rust, scale, paint, and other surface contaminants. For builders and construction companies, shot blasting offers the following benefits:

What is Shot Blasting?

Rusty Steel Beams

Corrosion Resistance

By removing impurities and creating a clean surface, shot blasting helps your steel components resist rust and corrosion, extending their lifespan.

Enhanced Appearance

A freshly blasted steel surface provides a clean, professional appearance, ideal for projects where aesthetics matter.

Improved Adhesion

Shot blasting ensures that coatings, paints, and primers adhere more effectively, creating a smoother and more durable finish.

Surface Strengthening

The process can also improve the structural integrity of the steel by reducing surface stresses, leading to stronger, more resilient materials.

Our Shot Blasting Process

At Builders Beams R Us, we use state-of-the-art shot blasting equipment to handle a wide range of structural steel components. Our team of experienced professionals carefully prepares each beam, column, or frame to meet your specific requirements.

Initial Inspection

We begin by inspecting each piece of steel for damage, contaminants, or imperfections. Ensuring the shot blasting process will be as effective.

Shot Blasting

Using high-powered machines, we blast steel shot or grit at the surface of the steel to remove any rust, old paint, and other contaminants.

Final Preparation

After the blasting is complete, we perform a final check to ensure the steel is ready for any additional treatments, such as priming, galvanizing, or painting.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about our Shot Blasting service.

  • What is shot blasting and why does structural steel need it?

Shot blasting is a mechanical surface preparation process in which steel abrasive media is propelled at high velocity against the steel surface. This strips away mill scale, rust, existing coatings and surface contamination, leaving a clean, bright surface with a consistent anchor profile that coatings can bond to reliably. Structural steel leaves the mill with a layer of mill scale that is flaky and provides a poor key for paint and protective coatings. Shot blasting removes this scale and any corrosion, ensuring that any primer, powder coat or galvanising applied afterwards adheres properly and performs as intended.

  • Is shot blasting included as standard on all beam orders?

Yes. Shot blasting is included as standard on every steel order that leaves our Wakefield workshop at no additional cost. All fabricated beams, columns and steelwork are shot blasted before despatch. This means the steel arrives on site in a clean, prepared condition ready for installation or for any additional protective coating your project requires. You do not need to request shot blasting separately when placing your order.

  • What cleaning standard do you blast to?

We blast to Sa 2.5, which is the near-white metal cleanliness standard defined in ISO 8501-1. This is the grade required before most protective coatings are applied, and it is what paint and primer manufacturers specify as the minimum surface preparation for their products to perform correctly. Sa 2.5 means virtually all mill scale, rust and contamination has been removed, leaving a clean, uniform grey surface with a defined anchor profile.

  • Can steel be painted or primed after shot blasting?

Yes, and this is exactly what shot blasting is designed to facilitate. Once the steel has been shot blasted, a primer or protective coating can be applied that will bond securely to the prepared surface. We offer a primer coat as part of our finishing service, applied directly after shot blasting. We also offer powder coating and can arrange galvanising where maximum corrosion resistance is required. Shot-blasted steel that is not immediately coated will begin to re-rust in humid conditions, so it is important to specify and apply the required finish promptly.

  • How long does shot blasting add to the lead time on a beam order?

Shot blasting is carried out as part of our standard fabrication process and is already factored into our usual lead times. Because we do everything in-house at our Wakefield workshop, including cutting, drilling, welding and shot blasting, there is no additional delay for shot blasting. For most standard RSJ and structural beam orders, we can fabricate, blast and deliver within a few working days of order confirmation. Call us on 07301 033 581 to confirm the current lead time for your specific order.
