FAQs
Frequently asked questions about our Final Preparations service.
What is the difference between priming and powder coating?
Priming involves applying a protective primer coat to shot-blasted steel, sealing the surface against moisture and providing a base for further paint coatings. It is the most common finish for structural steel that will be hidden within a building once the project is complete. Powder coating involves applying a dry paint powder electrostatically and curing it in an oven to produce a hard, durable decorative finish in any colour. Each finish is suited to different applications and environments, and we can advise on the best option for your project.
Can I choose a specific colour for powder-coated steel?
Yes. Powder coating is available in any standard RAL or BS colour, and we can also match specific shades where a colour reference is provided. When placing your order, confirm the RAL number or colour reference along with the finish type required (gloss, satin or matt). For visible structural steel in residential or commercial interiors, powder coat in a satin or matt finish is a popular choice because it provides a clean, consistent result that complements the surrounding finishes. Please specify your colour requirements at the time of ordering so we can schedule accordingly.
Is shot blasting always carried out before final preparations?
Yes. Shot blasting is the essential first step in the surface preparation process and is carried out before any protective coating is applied. Without shot blasting, mill scale and surface contamination would prevent primer, powder coat or galvanising from adhering properly, which would compromise the performance and longevity of the finish. All steel we supply is shot blasted as standard before any final preparation takes place. The shot blasting and finishing process all happens in-house at our Wakefield workshop, which means we control the quality and timing at every stage.
What finish should I specify for a structural steel beam that will remain visible in the finished building?
For steel that will be visible in the finished space, powder coat is the most popular choice. It provides a hard, consistent factory finish in any colour and is available in gloss, satin or matt. Satin finishes are particularly common for residential and barn conversion applications as they give a professional appearance without being overly reflective. For beams that will be painted on site, a primer coat gives the decorator a well-prepared surface to work from. Let us know the finish requirements when you order and we will advise on the best option.
